The opposite of blacklisting

What the fuck???

It just kills me how many names I used to respect are on this list. I don't understand how it's possible to make the argument that a criminal conviction where the defendent plead guilty should not be persued. He didn't have bad legal counsel, and if the judge was somehow "out to get him" then there were remedies available.

This just makes me angry.

My head is about ready to explode on this. I just don't understand, I really don't. I admit to liking a several of Polanski's films, but I would never, ever use that as an excuse to ask for him to be pardoned, especially for a crime as serious as this. And for one where he admitted his guilt.

It makes me nauseated.

More proof to never confuse the quality someone's art with their moral character.

I do not understand how they cannot see that despite his talent, Polanski hasn't paid for his crime at all.

Living in France in exile isn't a fucking hardship.

And gee, who's surprised to see Woody Allen's name on that list?

Snarky comments aside, I totally understand the urge not to want to stop admiring someone who has great artistic talent. But that doesn't change the fact of WHAT HE DID.

I'm appalled, but after the standing ovation he got at the Oscars a couple years ago, I can't say I'm particularly surprised.

This whole case is very revealing
...and is the source of all sorts of crazy behaviour.

I wish this petition was a flat-out statement of "Polanski is so awesome that we should just commute his sentence or something" vs. the half-ass BS about undermining the headspace of future international film festival attendees.

If you're going to argue that Roman Polanski is A, so gods-damned special that we should wave all the normal punishments for jurisdiction fleeing rapists, or 2, so likely to piss of a key ally like France that fuck normal jurisprudence this is worth politically interfering with the actions of the courts, then own up to it you mealy-mouthed weenies.

I totally agree, but also have to say thank you for the link, because some of the responses are classic, and are making me giggle inappropriately. Case in point:

People on this list, I interpret this as a offering to rape your children and then OMG RUN AWAY since I'm European and just roll that way. Thx!!!

'stina is, surprisingly enough, a lawyer from Houston, Texas who rambles about quite a number of things.
