Government intrusion. Literally.

The Burnt Orange Report reports on some awesome debate by Carol Alvarado regarding the sonogram bill, which would require all women seeking abortion to get a sonogram 24 hours before getting an abortion.
Perhaps the most appalling revelation during yesterday's hearing on HB-15, the House version of the Sonogram Bill, was that bill author Rep. Sid Miller, R-Every Woman's Uterus, didn't realize exactly what kind of highly intrusive procedure he was mandating for the women of Texas. This came to light during debate, when Rep. Carol Alvarado detailed the procedure Miller wants to force on Texas women.

From the Statesman:
When offering her amendment, Alvarado gave an in-depth description of a trans-vaginal sonogram, which she said is the only way to perform a sonogram on women who are less than eight to 10 weeks pregnant.

"This is not the jelly on the belly that most of you think," she said as she held up a vaginal probe. "This is government intrusion at its best."

BOR also provided a helpful diagram to demonstrate exactly what the hell the government of the state of Texas wants to do to women seeking a constitutionally protected health care service. BOR annotated a little.

Not only do I object to subjecting women to unnecessary, unwanted and expensive testing, it's almost literally fucking obscene what these Repbulicans want to do to women. When you see signs about "keep the government out of my uterus," they're not being figurative for much longer.

This is freakin' unbelievable. The Republican super-majority in Texas is letting the state die a slow painful death, killing the schools, cutting state Medicare and other programs for women and children (because once they are born they are no longer the problem of the Republican Party--unless they commit a crime and then it's throw 'em in jail and blame Liberals for being too soft for wanting any tome of safety net) refusing to raise taxes to pay for needed public works and yet THIS is how they want to flex their political muscle.

I've had those types of ultrasounds when I was going through IVF and they are not fun, even when you are doing it for reasons for when you want to have a child. I would crack jokes about "penis wands" or "the mega-vibrator" because it just so uncomfortable and it was the only way I could deal with the anxiety and the discomfort.

That was my of dealing, but my God, I can't imagine making a woman who is going to have an abortion go through that. What if the woman was raped? What if it's a young girl who was a victim of incest or rape? That kind of ultrasound is downright cruel--it would be piling on more trauma to someone already traumatized. Not that it would matter to those soulless bastards.

The other day I told my mother that if I still lived in Texas I'd be moving out around now because I'd be petrified to raise my daughter there. I would NOT want those fucktards telling her what she can or cannot do with her body. And I HATE HATE HATE thinking that way about the state I grew up in and still love.
