Dog book

Day seven. Coughing up junk. Joy.

Last night, Graham and I spent a half hour filling out forms about the pooches.

At the Diverseworks Gala on Friday, we purused the silent auction. At first, we bid on a sculpture that both of us liked, but we were quickly out-bid. And then we found a pet portrait service that we liked, bid and got out-bid on.

And then, in a corner, was this book. It was handmade with rough paper, and it was beautifully bound with sticks. The illustrations inside were lovely, and the book told the story of two Boston Terriers. The doggies were totally anthropromorphized and painted in various poses and situations that showed off their personalities. It was awesome, and the bid sheet said that we were going to bid on a book for out own pets. We bid on it instantly, and then two seconds later, we found out that the doggies in the book belonged to Dianne, one of the co-executive directors of Diverseworks and her partner Karen. Dianne's mother, it turns out, is the artist.

We babysat the bid for the rest of the night, and we fended off one other interested party.

Last night, Graham and I filled out a form about each dog to send to Dianne's mom:

Official Doggie Data Sheet and Questionnaire

Name: Crianza_____________________________

Breed and Gender: _Puli Female____________________________

Age: __6______

How and when did this dog become a part of your family?

Bought from a breeder as a puppy in 2003 to be a friend for the then ten year old Relampago, a male Puli that was the love of Christina’s life since 1992. He passed away in August, 2008.

List five to ten (or more) adjectives that best describe aspects of your dog’s personality?

Pretty, serious, opinionated, loud, protective (especially of her family), reserved, shy, sweet, gentle (sometimes).

What are the things your dog likes best?

Her toy moose and mouse. She likes to walk around and make them squeak. She likes to repel invaders by barking at them if they approach the house too closely; it works almost every time. Hanging out with her mama and daddy, and “some” of their friends. She is especially happy when her mama and daddy come home.

What are the things your dog likes least?

Rain, being by herself, her cousin Holden the black lab, baths, her sister interrupting her, certain dogs walking by the house, strangers who approach her too fast.

What frightens your dog?

Holden, thunder, loud, sudden noises. Moose surgery.

How does your dog interact with other animals?

She is the school marm of the dog park. She has also been referred to as a “fun Nazi”.

How does your dog interact with people?

If she knows and trusts them she is very loving and sweet. However she does not like crowds and will usually hide during parties.

If you have two or more dogs, or if you also have other pets, how does this dog interact with them?

Relampago raised her and she was Relampago’s best friend, and she was sad when he passed away. She slowly got used to our cat Athena, although at first she was very curious and would stare at Athena for a long time. We called her the “pupperazzi”. She missed Athena after Athena died. She likes to play with Celosa but can occasionally get frustrated with her “puppiness”. Usually, she’ll make Celosa do all the running and will strategically strike when Celosa runs by.

Add any other information that describes how your dog in individual or unique.

She is the prettiest dog in the whole world. No other dog is prettier than she is, and we tell her that every chance we get. She is also snaggle-toothed, a canine broke when she was younger. She is a princess who insists on sleeping on only the softest of surfaces. Oh, and she has dreadlocks.

What do you love best about this dog?

She is the sweetest, most loving and loyal dog in the whole world. She has stolen Graham’s canine heart.

Official Doggie Data Sheet and Questionnaire

Name: __Celosa (Spanish for Jealousy) ___________________________

Breed and Gender: __Puli, female___________________________

Age: __1______

How and when did this dog become a part of your family?

After our beloved Relampago passed away in August 2008 we knew we wanted to get a new dog to play with Crianza, so we let her breeder know we were looking. Two days after Christmas, 2008, we received an email from our breeder that a surprise litter was born. We picked up Celosa 9 weeks later. She was the smallest puppy from her litter.

List five to ten (or more) adjectives that best describe aspects of your dog’s personality?

Cute, rambunctious, energetic, playful, loving, exhausting, fearless, enthusiastic, fast, agile.

What are the things your dog likes best?

To chase Crianza (and Athena when she was alive) and any other dogs that will run away from her. Her toys, every single on. Rawhide. The family ranch where she can run and run and run. Mornings. Evenings. Any human being on earth. When either her mama or daddy takes a shower, she likes to stick her head through the shower curtain and stick her tongue in the air to catch the water that bounces off. But above all, there is no one thing better in the world than a tummy rub.

What are the things your dog likes least?

Having her butt shaved. Any other dog being paid attention to instead of her. Rain. Baths. Doesn’t like being groomed, which is bad news for a puli.

What frightens your dog?

Thunder, lightening, that’s about it. She’s pretty fearless.

How does your dog interact with other animals?

As long as they are willing to play with her—and understand that she is to be the center of attention at all times—she likes other dogs. She was very curious about Athena the Cat and liked to harass her. We are fairly certain Athena died solely to catch a break from Celosa’s attention.

How does your dog interact with people?

There is not a person alive, including Republicans, who she doesn’t love with all her heart. She hops up and down on her hind legs trying to get closer to the people who walk into the house. She loves parties, especially if party goers have food. She is the WORST guard dog in history as any intruder is just a possible new friend in her eyes, though admittedly, she barks a lot when she greets newcomers, so at least she sounds some sort of alarm.

If you have two or more dogs, or if you also have other pets, how does this dog interact with them?

She loves her sister Crianza very much but doesn’t like it when her mama and daddy pay attention to Crianza. She likes to get Crianza worked up and tries to goad her into play fights. Sometimes it works.

Add any other information that describes how your dog in individual or unique.

She is the very definition of “puppy”. She is small for a puli, although you better not tell her that. She loves her a glass of wine and is literally a “booze hound”. She also has an affection for ice cubes. Her dreadlocks are starting to take good shape, especially on her head.

What do you love best about this dog?

She is incredibly sweet, she will lick you until you holler “uncle” and then she just licks some more. Very funny, very vocal. She makes some of the funniest and cutest noises you have ever heard. When she is tired she can melt your heart with her sweetness.

I sent back the forms along with links to the puppies' photo shoot with Pixie last July, and links to their flickr tags (Celosa, Crianza). I sent also Relampago, Athena, Holden, and Zapata tagged pictures. And I linked to surgery shots and a post describing Crianza's obsession with the moose.

The artist e-mailed me back thanking me for the thorough information, and I think we're going to end up with an awesome book. Well worth the bid.

that sounds like it's going to be a great book. I think it's so great to get to do something like that with your doggies.

Ours are going to get to do their first "big trip" with mom and dad in March, we're taking them on vacation to Amarillo and beyond.

Puppies are fun.
