Geek gathering

Marketplace last night did a piece on Comicon. Their transition music after the piece ended was Beck's "Loser". Heh.

Morning Edidion interviewed Kevin Smith. Some funny stuff:

"That's what comicon has sort of become about. Most of the now studios go out there and kind of court the geek dollar."

"This is a presold audience. You don't have to let these cats know that the Watchmen's coming. They know. It's the rest of world you have to let know."

"You've never seen that many people gathered over things that are so insignificant. Like it's one thing, when that many people to gather together for the march on Washington or something. But this is just a bunch of people gathered together because they like SciFi and Fantasy. You just gotta be glad that these folks aren't organized."

I've never been to comicon before. Sooner or later I'll make it; lord knows enough of my friends make the pilgramage every year. It's sort of nice, every now and then, to hear the interest in one of my little subcultures.

I'd love to hear their take on Convergence or Burning Man.

LoL! He's not kidding.

But if "they" did start organizing a revolt or something, I'd totally be there. Have to get a good cosplay outfit together just in case!

Comicon these days is less about comics and more about movies. Specifically, marketing movies to a ready-made audience. It kind of makes me sad.
