The Flipside

I'm headed to Burning Flipside tomorrow in the Hill Country. Graham left yesterday with caellum, but since I missed so much work last month, I'm not taking off until tomorrow, with my friend Smash.

Flipside is a regional Burning event at Flat Creek Ranch, just outside Dripping Springs. Similar in ethos to Burning Man, it's a lot more low key, and it has it's own flavor. The setting is vastly different, though there are some hardships (generally heat, fire ants and usually rain). There is terrain, though, which Black Rock City is lacking, and there are trees for shade. There is also, blessedly, a Creek, which is usually big enough to accommodate a hundred or so people comfortably.

I've heard, though, that the Creek is down, even though April was a pretty rainy month, and I suspect this article (that momwolf directed me to) demonstrates part of the problem. I remember going to Pedernales State Park as a kid, which right next to Flat Creek Ranch. The state park was in a fairly remote location when I was in Girl Scouts, but it was fifteen minutes from the Austin suburbs when I went last year for Flipside.

I haven't really had time to think much about Flipside. Being sick wiped me out considerably, and then we had Art Car parade and my birthday in Austin, and then suddenly, Graham was in the attic hunting down tents and water jugs and blinky lights. I have no real costuming prepared for this particular trip, though of course I have a lot of stuff on hand that I can throw together at the last minute, which I intend on doing tonight. Smash and I can drive up and stop at HEB or Buckeys (or likely, both) to provision up, and since I'll only be there on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, it seems silly to overstress over this.

Still, now that Graham is there, I'm getting sort of excited about it. Dozens of friends from parts West and North flew in for Flipside, and there are other dozens from Texas. I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

I intend on floating in the creek and lounging in camp for most of the event. My being sick was the determining factor in having a shortened Flipside this year instead of the five day one. We are doing a Bacon, Chocolate Cake and Creepy Hug breakfast on Saturday morning, but I think I can handle that.
