According to the Pink Dome Martha Wong voted for the Constitutional ban on gay marriage in the state of Texas in the State Affairs committee today.
I have never been a fan, going as far back as her city council days. Now, it will be my personal mission of 2006 election to make sure that she never sees the inside of that Capitol building again.
Since its clear that she could give a rat's ass about Montrose, I will make sure that Montrose knows exactly who "represents" us.
Your days are numbered Ms. Feng Shui.
ETA:
I was so mad I just locked myself out of my car. Fortunately, I was in my own driveway and had left the back door open, so getting the spare and retrieving my keys wasn't a big deal.
The thing is, though, the woman's days are numbered, and in winning this vote, she has lost and I am going to win.
You have to understand the district. Debra Danburg was fantastic, and then redistricting in 2002 made the district lean just a little more to the right. Enough so that in the election Wong beat Danburg by five points. But, Ms. Wong just gave a great opening.
We are the highest educated district in the state. We have a shitload of money too. The Medical Center is in this district, as are River Oaks, West University and Southhampton. And more importantly: Montrose, my home and the neighborhood with more gay couples than any other place in Texas.
The rest of the district doesn't really care about the gay marriage issue. We're urban and sophisticated and educated, and we all overlap so much that everyone knows someone who would be hurt by this stupid, idiotic, hateful resolution. My district is full of money Republicans, not God Republicans, and they're beginning to squirm a little at what their party is doing.
They rationalize that it's those yahoos in the country that are making these rules; that they're smarter than their bretheren; that they'd vote more libertarian if there were better options. We, Democrats, have to make them squirm some more. We have to show them that in this at best moderate district, the radical right controls everything in the Republican party now. We have to show them that voting for someone like Martha Wong is just as bad as voting for the most bible thumping, vitriol spewing jackass out there. Her party made her vote for this, and it is in no way a reflection of her district. SHE is in no way a reflection of her district. It doesn't matter what she says, it doesn't matter how she phrases it, she's as dangerous as anyone of them, because she'll vote lock-step with them.
My district does not hate gay people. Martha Wong hates gay people. So my district needs to get rid of Martha Wong and put someone in the legislature who actually reflects us. Someone who actually
represents us.
And so every other district in the state, in the country, that says it's a moderate Republican district. There's no such thing as a moderate Republican anymore. They all march along with their most strident positions, and they must be stopped.
Martha Wong was never going to get my vote, and she knew that. But now, I'll damned well make sure that she doesn't get the votes of other people in my district.
Democrats, we need to find someone NOW to start running against her. We need to find someone in every district there is to run against "moderate" Republicans, because they're almost worse than their party mates.
