Sunday morning

home improvement
I have a million things to do, but inspiration struck yesterday and I now know what I want to do with my house design wise. I figured out that my spare bedroom really doesn't need to be a full time bedroom, and it'd be much more economical space wise to put a sleep sofa in instead. So I went shopping yesterday for a sleep sofa. I found three that I like and it's just a matter of deciding which one. I also need to get some minor work done with regard to the infrastructure of the house. I've called the air conditioning people, and they'll be here sometime next week. I need to call the plumbers and get a new hot water heater. After that, I'm thinking that I'll keep them on in order to move my washer and drier out of my spare bedroom and onto my deck. Then I'll build a shed around them so they're protected and I can get an amazing amount of space in this room.

Then there's the question of having two living spaces. One in the spare bedroom, which I really should start calling my office, and one in the living room. I think that if I move the TV in to the office then I can rearrange the living room to be a little more user friendly. Right now everything's oriented to the TV, and I'd prefer it if the room was more oriented to the fire place, though I need to redo the fire place (take off some mirrors that were probably put on it in the 70s).

My bedroom needs a wardrobe and a chair, and my dining room eventually will need a new table. I also need a side board or a credenza or something in the dining room.

But now I have a vision as to how I want my house, which is much better than I had before (which was make do with what I have and sorta kinda put it in rooms without thinking about it.) It will take a bit of time to do all of this, certainly I don't have the money to do it all at once, but since I do have a vision, I can go out and know what I'm looking for.

You are making me even more excited to get started with my place, whatever it may be, which I did not think possible. :-)

What size is your place? The main place I'm looking at right now is 924 SF (you can look at it at www.realtor.com, MLS #15210, Bryan, TX), and I'm not sure if that's big enough, especially because Pat told me the kitchen is small... It has built-ins in the kitchen and the living room (which you can see in the mirror in the lr photo). No fireplace, but I'm thinking one of those faux mantles from Pottery Barn would be good. And maybe, if I got Trading Space ambitious, a trompe l'oeil (which is not spelled right) fireplace... Oh god. I need Hobby Lobby and Ikea credit cards!

I now have visions of riding the carts through Ikea with you...

My place is 1056 square feet, and it seems like every single room is about twice the size of my house in Berkeley. I think that 100 square feet less will be quite livable. Living/dining room, kitchen, master, spare, bath. Porch on front, deck in back.

I spent all day yesterday in Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel looking at stuff for my house. I was so proud that I came away buying nothing, but having ideas about what I want to do. I need to redo my mantle, but I have no idea what's under the mirrors so it will be something of a challenge when that time comes.

This house looks great! Seems like there's a lot of space that you can work with.

My dad thinks its teeny. But I now have a list of about 12 other places to look at in addition to this one. My problem is is that I really want a room that I can dedicate as a studio space, and still have a decent guest area...

I'm buying my ticket now to go down and look.

If you have a vision, does this mean you're all unpacked? Because if so, I'll feel even more shamed at all the boxes we have left.

Do you have any pics up yet so we can see it? It sounds like you've really made tons of progress (unlike us). :)

I'm gonna be tripping over boxes in a month, aren't I?

:) I have one box to unpack and lots of pictures to hang. For right now it's livable, though not perfect. The day after my stuff was moved, my boss sent me home to unpack because she could tell my mind was elsewhere. I've had to minor gatherings since then and I wanted my house to be somewhat togetehr for them, though this spare room / study needs a LOT of work before I'll encourage guests to wander through.

No pics up yet. I really do need to get a digital camera some day.... I'll probably have some up in the next week or so though.

And I'll be shamed again!

I keep saying I'm getting pics up, but then I don't and by the time I think of it again, the house is once again too messy to ever immortalize on film.

One day...
